The Union Plus Scholarships are designed to assist union families in managing the expenses of higher education, offering scholarship amounts between $500 and $4,000.
Union families have received over $5.6 million in scholarships
Since its inception in 1991, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has granted over $5.6 million to students from working families who are eager to start or continue their tertiary education. Our dedication to higher education has positively impacted more than 4,000 families.
The Union Plus Scholarship Program is facilitated by the Union Plus Education Foundation, which is partially funded by contributions from the issuer of the Union Plus Credit Card. Note that holding a Union Plus Credit Card is not a prerequisite for applying for this scholarship.
Understanding the Union Plus Scholarship Program
Who Can Apply?
Active and retired members of participating unions, their spouses, and their dependent children (as per IRS guidelines) are eligible. The applicant, their spouse, or parent (if the applicant is a dependent) must have been a union member for at least one continuous year. This one-year membership requirement must be met by May 31 of the scholarship year. More details on eligibility can be found in the tab below.
Selection Criteria
This scholarship is competitive. Candidates are assessed based on academic performance, social consciousness, financial need, and understanding of labor. A recommended GPA of 3.0 or higher is suggested. The required essays can contribute to up to half of your total score. The scholarship applicants are evaluated by a neutral committee of tertiary educators.
Application Process
Applications open in mid-June, and a fully completed application must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. (Noon) Eastern Standard Time on January 31st of the scholarship year. Late applications will not be accepted.
Scholarship Amounts
The scholarship amounts vary from $500 to $4,000. These one-time cash grants are for studies commencing in the Fall of 2025. Students have the option to reapply each year.
