The National Horticulture Foundation is committed to laying a robust groundwork for the future of the industry by offering scholarship programs. These programs are designed to provide financial assistance to deserving students, enabling them to gain knowledge and skills, earn degrees beyond high school, and become active contributors and leaders in horticulture or related fields such as landscape professionals, arborists, landscape architecture, and research. The National Horticulture Foundation offers these scholarships annually, with the application deadline set for January 15. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 (C) or higher. Scholarship winners can reapply each year.
Students are encouraged to apply for any scholarships for which they meet the eligibility criteria.
The James S. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of James Davis, the founder and owner of Davis Tree Farm from 1978 until his death in 1995. A dedicated member of the FNGA, Davis actively contributed to his association through committee work and trade show activities. Scholarships range from $500 to $3,000, with the amount awarded based on individual applications. To qualify, students must be full-time undergraduates attending a community college, university, or technical institution within Florida.
The General Application Fund is made possible by generous donations from industry members to the National Horticulture Foundation. The Hoskin/McDougald Scholarship Fund was established by the Palm Beach Chapter of the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) in honor of Bob Hoskin and Sandy McDougald's dedication and service to the horticultural industry. The fund is generously supported by numerous industry members to help educate the next generation of industry professionals. To qualify, students must have resided within Palm Beach, Broward, Okeechobee, Martin, St. Lucie, or Indian River County for at least one year.
The Billy Barwald Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016 by the Northeast Chapter of the FNGLA to honor Billy Barwald's dedication and service to the horticultural industry. Billy was the founder of Barwald Landscaping and the Flying Dragon Citrus Nursery. He was also the third Landscape Architect registered in Florida and a charter member of the FNGLA. The scholarship, which awards $2500 to one student per year, aims to invest in the future of the horticultural industry. To qualify, students must reside in St. Johns, Duval, Clay, Nassau, or Baker County and plan to attend a college in Florida.
The Taking Root Scholarship, sponsored by Arborjet | Ecologel, is open to students enrolled in accredited arboriculture or horticulture programs. Applicants should be passionate about studying science and technology to advance the industry and have a history of community engagement. The scholarship, which awards $2500 to one student per year, covers a range of studies including plant pathology, entomology, chemistry related to invasive insect & disease management, arboriculture, urban forestry, horticulture, and landscape architecture. To qualify, students must be full-time undergraduates with a desire to pursue a career in arboriculture or plant health care.
