Lawrence W. and Francis W. Cox Scholarship

In 2008, a scholarship fund was set up in memory of Francis W. Cox and his father Lawrence W. Cox, thanks to the generous donation from Mrs. Wahneta T. Hinrichs.
Guidelines
- The Lawrence W. and Francis W. Cox Scholarship is awarded annually to a single undergraduate student pursuing civil engineering, to be used for tuition and fees.
- The scholarship aims to support the education of a deserving student in any civil engineering discipline.
Qualifications
- At the time of application and receipt of the award, the candidate must be enrolled in and planning to continue an undergraduate program in civil engineering or a related field, accredited by ABET or equivalent.
- Applicants must be members of the Society in good standing at the time of application and receipt of the award.
- Past recipients are eligible to apply in subsequent competitions for these awards, provided all other eligibility criteria are met.
Application Process:
Complete applications, following the instructions provided below, must be submitted by January 15 of the award year. Applications must be submitted online; mailed applications are no longer accepted. For any queries, please reach out to scholarships@asce.org.
Applications should include:
- filled out contact information form (PDF); (Note: this form requires the signature of a faculty advisor to be considered complete.)
- A personal essay of no more than 500 words, detailing the applicant's desire to become a civil engineer, involvement in the ASCE Student Chapter, and long-term goals and plans;
- detailed annual budget statement (PDF);
- official transcript;
- at least two recommendation letters, one of which must be from a faculty member; and
- a one-page resume.
Selection Process:
- All applications will be evaluated by the Society Awards Committee or its delegate for recommendation to the Executive Committee for final approval.
- The committee has the discretion to recommend no award in a given year if no worthy applications are received.
- Selection is based on the evaluation of the applicant’s essay, educational plans, academic performance, potential for growth, demonstrated leadership qualities, and financial need.
Awards:
- The scholarship amount will be determined annually by and subject to the approval of the Executive Committee of the ASCE Board of Direction, based on the income from the fund endowment.
- The recipient will be informed of the selection in the spring by the Executive Director of the Society.
- Award funds will be deposited into the recipient’s account with the business office of the institution chosen by the recipient.
- Funds can be used for tuition expenses and academic fees reasonably and logically associated with an undergraduate engineering program while continuing formal undergraduate education.

To complete the online application, you must have the following:
- A single PDF that includes the following in this order:
- A filled out contact information form (PDF); (Note: this form requires the signature of a faculty advisor to be considered complete.)
- A filled out detailed annual budget statement (PDF);
- A personal essay of no more than 500 words, detailing the applicant's desire to become a civil engineer, involvement in the ASCE Student Chapter, and long-term goals and plans;
- A one-page resume that includes honors, activities, organizations, ASCE student chapter activities including any offices held, and any work experience;
- At least two (2) recommendation letters. Recommendations must be submitted online by the author and must have a signature and be on letterhead. (Note: ensure you provide the recommendation letter submission link to your recommenders. Please ask your recommenders to submit one general letter for you instead of a separate letter for each scholarship for which you are applying.)
- Official Transcript: A digital copy of an official transcript must be sent from your institution to scholarships@asce.org. If a digital copy is not available, send a sealed copy to: ASCE Scholarships Program, American Society of Civil Engineers, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, VA 20191.
