In 2002, the employees of Figg Engineering Group established a scholarship fund in memory of Eugene C. Figg, Jr., F.ASCE, the recipient of the ASCE 2002 OPAL Award for Design. Eugene Figg devoted his life, his career, and his company to the art of bridge creation.
Guidelines
- The Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Civil Engineering Scholarship may be awarded annually to a single undergraduate civil engineering student to assist with their undergraduate tuition costs and fees.
- The scholarship aims to support a deserving student with an interest in bridge design and construction in their educational pursuits.
Qualifications:
- At the time of application and receipt of the award, the applicant must be an undergraduate student enrolled in an ABET-accredited or equivalent program, a U.S. citizen, a Society Student Member in good standing, and have a passion for bridge design and construction.
- The scholarship can only be awarded to students who will use it to continue their formal undergraduate education at a recognized educational institution.
- Past recipients are eligible to apply in subsequent competitions for these awards, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria.
Submission:
- Complete applications, following the instructions provided below, must be submitted by January 15 of the award year. Applications must be submitted online; mailed applications are no longer accepted. For inquiries, please contact scholarships@asce.org.
Applications must contain:
- a filled-out contact information form (PDF); (Note: this form requires the signature of a faculty advisor to be considered complete.)
- a personal essay of no more than 500 words that outlines the applicant's desire to become a civil engineer, specific ASCE Student Chapter involvement, long-term goals and plans, and a specific interest in bridge design or construction;
- a detailed annual budget statement (PDF);
- an official transcript;
- at least two recommendation letters, one of which must be from a faculty member; and
- a one-page resume.
Selection:
- All applications will be evaluated by the Society Awards Committee or its designee for recommendation to the Executive Committee for final approval. Copies of all applications will be made available to the Figg Engineering Group upon request.
- The committee has the right to recommend that no award be given in a particular year if no worthy applications are received.
- Selection is based on an assessment of the applicant’s essay, expressed interest in bridge design or construction, educational plans, academic performance, potential for growth, demonstrated leadership qualities, and financial need.
Awards:
- The scholarship amount will be determined annually by and subject to the approval of the ASCE Board of Direction's Executive Committee based on income from the fund endowment.
- The recipient will be informed of their selection in the spring by the Society's Executive Director.
- Award funds will be deposited into the recipient’s account with the business office of the institution chosen by the recipient.
- Funds can be used for tuition costs and academic fees reasonably and logically associated with an undergraduate engineering program while continuing formal undergraduate education.
Application Instructions

To complete the online application, you must have the following:
A single PDF that includes the following in this order:
- A filled-out contact information form (PDF);
- (Note: this form requires the signature of a faculty advisor to be considered complete.)
- A filled-out detailed annual budget statement (PDF);
- A personal essay of no more than 500 words that outlines the applicant's desire to become a civil engineer, specific ASCE Student Chapter involvement, long-term goals and plans, and a specific interest in bridge design or construction;
- A one-page resume that includes honors, activities, organizations, ASCE student chapter activities including any offices held, and any work experience;
- At least two (2) recommendation letters. Recommendations must be submitted online by the author and must have a signature and be on letterhead.
- (Note: ensure you provide the recommendation letter submission link to your recommenders. Please ask your recommenders to submit one general letter for you instead of a separate letter for each scholarship for which you are applying.)
- Official Transcript: A digital copy of an official transcript must be sent from your institution to scholarships@asce.org. If a digital copy is not available, send a sealed copy to: ASCE Scholarships Program, American Society of Civil Engineers, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, VA 20191.
