The Community Foundation of the Verdugos administers multiple scholarship funds established by generous donors—some who have passed on and others who continue to support students—intended to help young people further their education and career goals.
Eligibility details for individual scholarships
- “Big Man Fritsche” Scholarship — In honor of Leonard Fritsche, a longtime Glendale and La Crescenta resident nicknamed “The Big Man.” Open to students who live in the Verdugo Region (Burbank, Glendale, and the foothill communities of Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, La Cañada‑Flintridge, Montrose, and Verdugo City) and who are graduating from a public or private high school in that area. This award is reserved for students planning to enter a vocational or career-technical program (examples: woodworking, auto mechanics, plumbing, landscaping, dental hygiene, veterinary technology, electrical, cosmetology, culinary arts, etc.).
- Dr. John & Mae Benjamin Scholarship — For a student preparing for a career in medicine.
- Christopher A. Burrows Memorial Scholarship — Available to students who live in La Cañada‑Flintridge or La Crescenta and who are graduating in June from a high school located in La Cañada‑Flintridge or La Crescenta.
- Dellinger Scholarship — Created to honor Judith and Ernest Dellinger; awarded to high school seniors graduating from a Burbank Unified School District school.
- Emilie Cacho Memorial Scholarship — For Latina students at Hoover High School who intend to pursue studies in mental health, school counseling, psychology, or social work at a two‑ or four‑year college or university.
- The First Christian Church of Glendale Scholarship — Requires the applicant to affirm faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and personal Savior. The student must be a graduating senior and a U.S. citizen, and must provide proof of residency in one of the following communities: Glendale, La Crescenta, La Cañada‑Flintridge, Montrose, Verdugo City, Sunland, or Tujunga, even if attending a different area public or private high school.
- Glendale Latino Association Scholarship — For students of Latino heritage who are graduating from a Glendale Unified School District public or private high school, or from Allan F. Daily Continuation High School.
- Gonzales Harris Bilingual Scholarship — Established by three sisters who valued education. Applicants must be graduating from a public or private high school within the Verdugo Region (Burbank, Glendale, Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, La Cañada‑Flintridge, Montrose, or Verdugo City), have an overall GPA of at least 3.5, provide proof of U.S. citizenship, and demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English.
- John & Elsie Krikorian / Women Achievers Journalism Scholarship — Created in memory of the founders of Business Life Magazine; intended for students pursuing studies in journalism, marketing, or business.
- Frank & Ann Leone Scholarship — Honors and supports a graduating senior from Glendale High School.
- The Sambar Scholarship Endowment — Provides financial assistance to graduates of a Glendale Unified School District area public or private high school, offering recipients a “little hand up” as they pursue college.
- Tuesday Afternoon Club Scholarship — Available to students graduating from one of the following Glendale‑area high schools: Allan F. Daily Continuation High School, Crescenta Valley High School, Glendale High School, or Herbert Hoover High School.
